Supplements and Prostate Cancer: What You Need to Know

Statin drugs, aspirin and metformin are heart-healthy drugs and are used to prevent cardiovascular problems and diabetes. Research is starting to suggest they could help prevent prostate cancer, and cut the risk of dying from this disease. In general, it is safe to say that heart healthy = prostate healthy.

Almost all heart-healthy lifestyle changes could cut the risk of prostate cancer. These lifestyle changes include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Having a good diet that includes fiber

  • Exercising

Though aspirin is beginning to get research for likely lowering the risk of dying from prostate cancer, please do not pop an aspirin a day if you're only worried about prostate cancer. It could be more harm than good if your risk for cardiovascular problems is low.

Talk to your doctor about your risk for heart disease. If your risk is high, baby aspirin may work for you, but if it's low, the side effects may not be worth it.
